Focus, distraction, practice, and more

Focus, distraction, practice, and more 2
Nadia Colburn // July 2, 2024 // 0 Comments

I'm back home in Cambridge after three wonderful weeks in Panama.

I spent the last two weeks of the trip at an Airbnb, writing. Aside from swims and a few short adventures, I focused only on my writing project. It was amazing to see how much progress I made without interruptions.

Back home, it's great to be with Eric and other family and friends again; it's nice to be in the New England landscape, and to have the comforts of home—and also a cool breeze at night.

But I'm also very aware of how my attention is more diffuse.

There are so many things to distract me. And coming back to the non-stop news cycle (for three weeks, I didn't look at the news!) has felt like a shock to my system.

We can't all go on two-week writing retreats. And even those of us lucky enough to travel also come home. So, how do we stay focused at home? How do we take action in the world, be in relationship with others, and also tend to our private creative lives? (I'll have more posts about this coming up...)

One answer is to get supports. We need supports and structure to help us focusand to move us forward in our creative lives.

So today, I thought I'd share the resources from my Free Resource Library. These resources are in the form of guides, practices, teachings, and more.

(Didn't get a chance to attend my Publication Masterclass a few weeks ago? No worries! The Free Resource Library includes two free publication guides, which offer comprehensive, step-by-step plans for publishing and sharing your work; you'll have everything you need, all in one place.)

Inside my Free Resource Library, you'll find:

  • E-Book: Embrace Your Story: The 7 Essential Steps to Write with More Power and Ease
  • A Metta Meditation with Writing Prompts
  • Video: Yoga and Writing Prompts for Embodied Writing
  • 10 Inspiring Writing Prompts
  • Guided Meditation: Silent Breath
  • Guided Meditation: Body and Creative Flow
  • 50+ Healing Affirmations
  • 10-Minute Guided Meditations
  • In-depth Guide: How to Get Published in Magazines & Journals
  • In-depth Guide: How to Publish Your Poetry Book
  • In-depth Guide: 50 Ways to Combat the Climate Crisis (a guide to help you take action—partly by using your voice—so that you can make a difference without feeling overwhelmed and also so that you don't feel disempowered in combating this crisis!)
  • and more!

I'm committed to making my teachings accessible to everyone, and I'm passionate about helping you access the full power of your creative voice and vision. I believe that together, we can use the power of literature for transformative, compassionate change.

These free resources will also help you enjoy the writing process, whatever genre you're working in.

As always, I love to hear from you—and please share this with friends who might enjoy it!

And, for those of you in the US, I wish you a happy 4th—may we remember, in this complicated country, our better qualities 🙂

with love,
Nadia

Enjoy now: two new podcast interviews!

Edges, Boxes, & Doorways: Poetry and Mindfulness as a Path to Generative Action with Nadia Colburn: Our Mindful Nature Podcast with Meryl Arnett

It was a pleasure being in conversation with Meryl, whose podcast I've long admired. In our conversation, we discuss poetry, mindfulness, and so much more. We talk about writing from the body, agency in times of distress, and meeting the "edge" places in our lives from a place of opening rather than contraction. We also explore mindful writing practices to support ourselves in times of change. Grab your journal and tune in for this conversation -- and special guided practice 🙂

Yoga, Mindfulness, and Writing with Nadia Colburn: Emerging Form Podcast with Christie Friesen Aschwanden and Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

This is another podcast I've long admired with two wonderful writer hosts. We talk about my poetry practice, writing to meet trauma, and how I weave together yoga, mindfulness, writing, and activism. We also explore common obstacles to creative practice, some ways to include the body in our practice, how my teaching affects my writing, and how I came to write I Say the Sky.
