I also want to share part of what I so love about writing to heal.
One of my students, L., had been in therapy for close to three decades, and she had always turned to her beloved journal as a healing modality, but it was when she began to work with me and use a step-by-step guide with writing as a tool for healing that something fundamental began to shift.
The old patterns and depression that had haunted her lifted, and she began to taper the medications she'd been on for those three decades.
So what changed? What shifted?
Through her writing, she began to see her life with greater clarity. She began to witness herself differently and knit together her spiritual and political beliefs more closely with her own story.
And she was able to stay focused on having a more neutral, witnessing perspective when she came to look at her life and the experiences.
Her journal had been a trusted friend, but it had also been a place to repeat old patterns, to tell the same story or get caught in her ruminations.
Similarly, her therapy had been a wonderful place to get support, but she found that she often got bogged down in the day-to-day and didn't really have a coherent, sustained place to make sense of her story.
When L. wrote with my guidance, she had tools to better see and understand the big picture; she was able to write and come back to the page, write and then revise, and step into a larger perspective and authority.
Through writing, L was able to notice patterns that she hadn't been able to see in therapy, and she was able to unearth and unsilence some of her more challenging experiences that even years of therapy hadn't given her tools to hold or process with real authenticity.
Over time, L. began to feel so much better that she was able to get off her medications completely. Of course, medications can be life-saving, but in L.'s case, she was able to feel healthy without them.
By pairing writing with embodied practices, L. had developed a different relationship to herself and to her body. She had begun to listen to her body differently and learn how to connect with herself in more compassionate, receptive ways and come to trust herself and her experiences more fully.
Like L. and many of my students, I have found these practices very healing in my own life, and I'm very excited to share them with you in my free class next week.
Sign up here or at the button below, and you will also get a copy of my free 20+ page guide with prompts and recorded meditations that you can get started with right away 🙂
I hope to see you at the free class! 🙂
